Top Ten LNG Producing Countries in 2024

On October 12, 1964, the world’s first LNG carrier, the Methane Princess, delivered the first LNG cargo from Algeria to England.

Since then, the global LNG production capacity has reached 483 MTPA (million metric tonnes per year).

Here are the top LNG producers in 2024:

  1. USA – 91 MTPA
  2. Australia – 88 MTPA
  3. Qatar – 77 MTPA
  4. Malaysia – 32 MTPA
  5. Indonesia – 30 MTPA
  6. Russia – 29 MTPA
  7. Algeria – 26 MTPA
  8. Nigeria – 22 MTPA
  9. Trinidad – 15 MTPA
  10. Egypt – 12 MTPA

World’s Largest LNG Importing Countries

While the US is the largest LNG-exporting country, China is the largest LNG-importing country in 2023.

Here are the world’s top ten LNG-importing countries in 2023, and the LNG volume they imported in billion cubic meters.

  • China – 97.8
  • Japan – 90.3
  • South Korea – 60.6
  • India – 31
  • France – 30.7
  • Taiwan – 27.4
  • Spain – 24.9
  • United Kingdom – 19.4
  • Italy – 16.3
  • Thailand – 16.1
