8 Facts About Bakken Shale Oil

  1. Bakken Shale oil is name after the Bakken Formation, a series of geological layers of shale, siltstone, and sandstone underlying parts of North Dakota, eastern Montana, and southern Saskatchewan. The 360-million-year old formation is up to two miles below the surface, but is itself very thin, generally less than 100 feet.
  1. Bakken Formation holds huge amount of oil and gas. In the entire Bakken Total Petroleum System, which includes another rock layer called Three Forks, the USGS estimates that there are 7.4 billion barrels of technically recoverable oil. In addition to the oil, the formation contains 6.7 trillion cubic feet of natural gas.
  1. The oil contained in the Bakken is not easy to extract due to the low permeability of the rocks and the thinness of the deposits. To stimulate production, horizontal drilling and hydraulic fracturing are used to create pathways for the oil to flow from the tight rocks into the well bore.
  1. Crude oil production surged from 100,000 barrels a day in 2007 to more than 1.1 million barrels a day in 2014. Current production is about 1 million barrels per day.
  1. Thousands of wells have been drilled since 2007. Currently the number of wells is around 13,500.
  1. Crude oil from the Bakken Formation is more volatile than many other forms of crude oil.
  1. The number of active rigs in the state’s oil patch was 39 in February 2017. It increased to 51 in April 2017 – an 18 percent increase since February.
  1. According to Platts analytical data, breakeven prices in the Bakken shale play fell to $33.53 a barrel in April 2017, from $37.91 a barrel in the same month last year. According to Arthur Berman, 10% of the reduction is due to advancement in technology and 90% is due to lower costs in equipment and services.

People tend to have a preferred conflict resolution style, but may use different methods in different conflict situation. Therefore, it is important that you realize the styles you use in resolving various conflicts you face.

Here are the common 5 styles people use in resolving conflicts.

  1. Avoiding Style

In this style, you are unassertive and your approach is uncooperative. You probably feel neither your personal goals nor the relationship with the other person is important.

You probably adopt this avoiding style when there is no urgency to resolve the situation.

Results: No win No win

  1. Accommodating Style

In this style, you are cooperative yet your approach is unassertive. You probably give in to maintain the relationship with the other person, but your personal goals are sacrificed.

You probably adopt this style because you want to preserve harmony and avoid disruption.

Results: Small win Small win

  1. Compromising Style

This is a cooperative approach. In this style, you value your personal goals and your relationships with the other party. Here you are willing to give and try to get concessions from the other party.

You probably use this style when you and the other person have equal power and you want to achieve temporary settlement for complex issues.

Results: Medium win Medium win

  1. Competing Style

This is an uncooperative approach. In this style, you seek to achieve your personal goals at the expense of the relationship with the other person.

You probably use this style because a quick and decisive action is vital, or when you feel you must get what you want.

Results: Win Lose

  1. Collaborating Style

This is an assertive and cooperative approach. Here you and your counterpart both try to resolve the conflict by open and direct communication.

In this style, you and your counterpart want to achieve a win-win outcome and desire to maintain good relationships with each other.

Results: Win Win

The Future is Bullish for LNG

The Asia Excellence, one of six new LNG vessels in Chevron Shipping’s fleet, delivered the first cargo of LNG from the Gorgon Project to foundation customer Chubu Electric in Japan in 2016.

“Natural gas is truly becoming a globally traded commodity, and the future is bullish for liquefied natural gas (LNG),” according to Mike Wirth, Chevron vice chairman and executive vice president of Midstream and Development. With LNG demand projected to grow by roughly two-thirds over the next decade, he says, “It’s an exciting time to be a part of this industry.”

“Asia alone will be responsible for nearly 50 percent of expected global LNG demand growth over the next decade.”

HPHT Subsea Tree and Hybrid Umbilical

This is a HPHT subsea tree used at Chevron’s Alder Field in the North Sea. It is called a vertical monobore tree. The system allows the Alder team to safely control production from the high pressure and high temperature Alder reservoir lies 14500 feet below seabed and manage any fluids injected into the well using an umbilical.

This is the hybrid umbilical, merging two technologies – steel tubing and thermoplastic hosing – used by Chevron to provide reliable and efficient subsea conduit to relay power, fluids and communications between the subsea equipment and the platform at Alder field.

How an iron ore looks like?

iron-oreThis iron ore is from an iron mine in Western Australia. High quality iron ores consist of mostly magnetite and hematite minerals, and their iron content can be as high as 70%. Magnetite and hematite are two different types of iron oxide.

The chemical composition of magnetite is Fe3O4 and hematite is Fe2O3. Smelting is used to extract iron from iron oxide. In this process, the powdered iron ore is mixed with carbon. Under intense heat, the carbon will remove the oxygen from the iron oxide. So, in the natural rusting process, iron is oxidized into iron oxide and in the smelting process the iron oxide is reduced into iron.

Offshore Drilling and Production

This picture shows an offshore fixed jacket-type drilling and production platform being supported by a mobile floating platform. With a drilling rig sitting on top of the fixed platform, you are looking at situation where an oil or gas reservoir has been discovered during exploration phase.

At the field development phase, one or more platforms will be installed before production wells are drilled.  After all the development wells are drilled, all the drilling equipment will be removed and the platform will become an oil and gas production platform. The mobile support platform will also be removed.

Wells drilled from offshore platforms are usually directional wells. Directional wells are directed to various parts of an oil or gas reservoir located several thousand feet below seabed using directional drilling methods. Through directional wells, petroleum engineers can produce an offshore reservoir oil and gas effectively and efficiently from wells located on one or several offshore production platforms.
